Assessment of Solid Waste Management Methods in Some Selected Parts of Owerri West, Imo State, Nigeria

In many developing countries, improper solid waste management (SWM) poses serious environmental and public health risks. Solid wastes are typically dumped into drains open areas since they not collected. The effects of this incident affect both human life the environment. addition to identifying sources, types, defining features in study region, aimed evaluate current methods three host communities (Eziobodo, Obinze, Ihiagwa) Federal University Technology Owerri, Imo state, Nigeria. A systematic questionnaire was used collect data for cross-sectional descriptive study. Four hundred four (404) copies were distributed, a multi-stage sampling procedure adopted selection respondents subsequent collection. generated presented tables percentages analyzed using Statistical Package Social Science (SPSS) version 22.0. Results obtained from show that 52.7% female while 47.3% male. age range between 26 35 years. Considering pattern practice, majority practice incineration (42.8%), followed by recycling (35.9%), fermentation (11.6%) composting (9.7%) least practiced pattern. Garbage 42.8%, plastics 35.9%, cans 11.6%, paper 9.7% types (42.3%) disposes themselves Government/paid collectors constitute only 2.0% disposal method. About 55.4% is gutter/drains, 34.7%, 5.7%, 4.2% disposed at nearby bushes, roadsides, approved dumpsites respectively. major factor associated with method as reported 71% (286) lack information. According study, there significant relationship access sustainability (p= 0.022). There need government equip rural facilities dispose refuse also place them close interval apart households so can be easily accessed well train local residents about how affects health.
